High Performance Computing without high capital expenditure
August 26, 2010
Want to make an animated feature film along the lines of Avatar? You’ll need 3,500 servers alone just to crunch the numbers. The good news is that with a High Performance Computing (HPC) option such as Steam Engine, you can lease those servers for the short term instead of having to find the capital to buy them outright.
This ‘infrastructure on demand’ answers the demand among industries that need massive amounts of computing capacity for relatively short periods of time. Industries such as visual effects, geo-science, mining, biomedical and financial industries who only need the extra resources for bursts of rendering, simulation and process intensive applications.
Steam Engine’s cost-effective, short-term leasing options mean that you no longer need enormous amounts of capital to take advantage of HPC anymore. As Stefan Gillard from Steam Engine explains, “HPC traditionally was only available to businesses with large amounts of capital. Now that there’s an option that requires zero capital expenditure, this barrier entry has disappeared.”
