Putting the utility model to work with HP 3PAR Storage
March 8, 2011
The utility model works for power companies, right? Well, it works just as well with virtualised storage, as the tried and tested Utility Storage platform from HP 3PAR clearly demonstrates.
Utility storage gives organisations – from hosting providers and enterprises right through to SMEs – the ability to start small and quickly scale up in response to storage needs. The technology delivers enterprise features such as scalability and just-in-time provisioning without the big budget or the operational complexity that comes with most legacy enterprise storage area networks.
HP’s recent acquisition of 3PAR makes it the only company in the world that delivers virtualised storage on a truly converged server, network and storage platform.
“With HP 3PAR, you can deploy your utility storage service very quickly. It reflects our philosophy that storage should be as simple to tap into as the power grid,” said Steve Kelly, Sales Director, 3PAR South Pacific Hewlett-Packard.
“HP 3PAR Utility Storage is the only enterprise storage platform that delivers 100% of the agility and efficiency required by virtual data centres, yet on average you need to purchase 50% less capacity to store your data with our pioneering thin technologies.”
Some of the key features of the system include:
- Scale-out capability
With the continual growth in data and traffic, storage systems are constantly under pressure. HP 3PAR’s ‘scale-out’ capability ensures these systems don’t get weighed down by increased demand. Rather, the more storage that’s added, the faster it gets. - 10x more efficient with autonomic management
HP 3PAR Utility Storage handles provisioning, tiering, and storage management intelligently with very minimal administrator intervention. Its autonomic capability (responding by itself to changing workload conditions) is unique. The benefit is that you are freed up to focus more on your business, and don’t require huge skills to constantly tune and manage your storage infrastructure. - Multitenancy
This allows many different applications and users to share a common storage platform, meaning greater consolidation and more efficient use of resources. - Enhanced reporting capabilities
The system enables users to see the consumption of resources in much more detail, making the system more accountable and predictable – and thus more efficient.
3PAR supports HP’s Converged Infrastructure strategy
HP’s acquisition of 3PAR will accelerate its highly successful Converged Infrastructure strategy – which pushes the maxim ‘Any workload, anywhere, anytime’ – by driving growth in the fast-growing virtual data centre market.
In a nod to the success of the 3PAR business, HP has appointed David Scott, former CEO of 3PAR to lead the HP storage portfolio.
